Patrick Bourdet, the founder of Orano Med, conceived the concept of utilizing 212Pb for medical uses. During the early 2000s, Areva (now Orano) explored the potential of utilizing materials derived from its primary nuclear energy operations. The field of nuclear medicine and Targeted Alpha Therapy exhibited considerable promise, despite challenges in the supply of isotopes. The project to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting and purifying this isotope quickly emerged with adequate resources to produce larger quantities of 212Pb. The endeavor yielded successful results and conclusive preclinical studies.
