The National Institutes of Health comprises 27 distinct components known as Institutes and Centers. Each possesses its own precise research agenda, frequently concentrating on specific illnesses or bodily systems. With the exception of three components, all receive their financial support directly from the Congress and manage their individual budgets. NIH leadership actively influences the agency's research planning, activities, and perspective. The Office of the Director serves as the central office, tasked with establishing policy for NIH and coordinating the programs and activities of all the NIH components.
